Not only is Lochaber one of the most beautiful areas in the West Highlands it is also amongst the most welcoming. Since arriving in the area I have felt genuinely at home.
The local residents are aware of the downside of life as a remote and rural GP, and the difficulties currently faced by areas like this in recruiting staff. As a result the service is not abused, and when an out of hours call is received there is usually a genuine need. People here are definitely appreciative of the service we provide, and the position of the GP still held with a great deal of respect, unlike other areas I have seen.
The quality of life is second to none: where else can you watch deer from your front window after you wake, then take a challenging hill walk in a true wilderness area before watching the spectacular sunset from a white sand beach, and all whilst being on-call! The opportunities for outdoor activities are extensive, the local produce (especially seafood) is wonderful, the schools are high quality and the job is both challenging and rewarding. I personally can think of nowhere else I would rather live and work, and would be happy to talk to anyone thinking of a career in General Practice in Lochaber.
