ABOUT FORT WILLIAM

Fort William is a busy little town, with both established and developing local industries. There are a large number of holiday makers who come mainly for the outdoor activities.  Indeed the town is now known as The Outdoor Capital of the UK.  There is some of the best technical climbing in the country as well as lots of beautiful hills for walking in.  Aonach Mor ski area is about 10 minutes up the road between Fort William and Spean Bridge, there is also a world class mountain bike track  there.  As well as these things there are lots of other activities going on in the evenings and a Leisure Centre with swimming pool, climbing wall and gym etc.

PRACTICE PREMISES

The practice is part of a purpose built building called the Fort William Health Centre (Completed May 2007).  The 2 other town surgeries are co-located here along with all of the Community Services, such as District Nurses, Podiatry, Dentistry, Mental Health Team and Learning Disability Nurses.  There is also a shared minor ops suite and phlebotomy room.  There is ample car parking for both patients and staff and the centre is serviced by regular buses from the town and adjoining villages.  Ground floor location means access for people with disabilities and there is a portable loop system for those visitors and patients who are hard of hearing.  All GP's, Practice Nurses and the GP Trainee have a dedicated consulting room and there is a dedicated training room which includes the Practice Library, which can be used by the Trainee and visiting Medical Students for quiet periods of study.  There is also a PC there for access to the Internet, eLibrary etc.  This room is also used for both clinical and staff meetings.

EDUCATION

The Postgraduate Centre is in Inverness with full educational programme and regular Trainee and GP courses, including Day Release courses. Regular tutorials are also held in the surgery and regular meetings are held in Fort William of the Lochaber Medical Society and there are combined Clinical Meetings with Medical and Surgical Departments of the Belford Hospital.  Practice-based Small Learning Group - meets monthly with neighbouring practices.

OUT OF HOURS CALLS

The OOH Service is run as a collaborative by the Mid Highland Health Community Partnership. (mid-Highland CHP).  This operates from the Belford Hospital in Fort William, where there is a receptionist from 6.00pm to 10.00pm each week-day evening and from 8.00am to 10.00pm Saturday and Sunday.  There is also a driver and vehicle available for all house calls.  The Trainee is always covered by a Principal from the practice when on call.  All our principals are currently on the rota to undertake the service and the Trainee is not expected to do Out of Hours Calls until sufficiently familiar and able to do this.  Usually by three months.
